In Choosing carpeting both your personal Design Style and Carpet Style need to be taken into consideration. In this section we will explore both aspects to give you an over view of things to keep in mind and the options available to you. Design Style Carpeting is a major design element and as such will effect drastically the overall feel of a given room. If proper consideration is given to the choice of color, finish, texture and effects, carpeting can bring the ideal settings that you imagined possible into reality. In the selection of carpeting, color is one of the main factors. As one of the largest decorative areas in a room,
second only to the walls, Carpeting brings a room together. Keep in mind existing furniture or planned furniture The use of color can alter the perception of the size of a room. Lighter colors of carpet will make small rooms appear larger. Conversely darker colored carpets can create a sense of intimacy, by decreasing the sense of space in large rooms. A single color installed through connecting rooms creates a feeling of continuity and expansion while contrasting colors divide areas and create definition.
Hint: Keep in mind that the color of the carpet (and sample used for selection) can be affected by several factors including the lighting in the room and existing wall and furniture colors. View the samples being considered in the rooms where they are to be installed. The appearance of the sample in the retail store is not necessarily what it will look like in your home once installed. The texture of a carpet can also affect the depth of color appearance. A plush surface will appear lighter than the same color used in a textured finish. Textures can also make a solid coloration appear to have a tone on tone effect. Carpet Style Velvet Plush is the most elegant of carpet styles. This very dense carpeting has little or no twist to the yarns resulting in a blending of the fibers creating a smooth effect. This style will show footprints and vacuum marks because of its velvety nature but this same factor creates the glossy sheen that makes this style so appealing. Saxony Plush is not as formal as Velvet Plush but still Saxony is less dense than the Plushes, but it is the more popular of the cut pile finishes. This style has many forms depending on the twist in the yarn and surface variations. These variations can create textured styles as well as other effects.
Textured is basically a Saxony, but each tuft of yarn is kinked slightly. This creates a variegated effect even though the actual yarn lengths are uniform. In certain lighting this style can appear to be multi colored even though it is actually a solid color, but this same factor eliminates the visibility of footprints and vacuum marks. Level loop is the simplest construction and the least formal. The pile is left in a loop configuration rather than cut like the previous styles. This style
wears well and is suitable for casual environments, like exercise rooms, or places of business. Multi level loop is the same as a level loop except that the loops are of varying heights. This variation may be done at random for a general textured appearance or in a uniform manner to produce a specific design. This style can be used where the durability of level loop is needed in a more formal design. Berber is a level or Multi level loop construction using a thicker yarn. This style is predominantly done in beige and pastel tones to create a natural effect. Berber carpets are ideal for casual applications like dens, family rooms, etc. |
